Your Guide to What's Happening at Crossroads

A Renewed Mind

A Renewed Mind

I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. - Romans 12:1-2

Paul begins Romans chapter 12 with an appeal to present our bodies as a living sacrifice but informs us that in order to do so we must first be transformed through the renewal of our minds. This week I wanted to take a few minutes to explore what it means to renew our minds.

The result of a renewed mind is a transformed life. It is a life that is presented to Christ as a living sacrifice, one that is holy, acceptable, and pleasing to God. This transformation does not occur without effort on our part. When we surrender to the lordship of Jesus Christ there is not a spiritual switch that is flipped making us desire to do only good. Our minds are still depraved and we must work to renew and realign our minds with the mind of Christ.

So how do we renew our minds? I want to provide you with a series of questions and actions that will aid you in your transformation journey:

1. Why do you want a renewed mind? This may seem obvious but motives matter. If your primary reason for living a transformed life is not to develop a strong relationship with God, then I question how successful you will be in this journey. The whole reason to renew your mind is so you can know God's will, then do what is good, acceptable, and pleasing to God. It is all about a relationship with our creator. How secure is your relationship?

2. Where is your mind in the renewal process? Be honest with your answer here. Your renewal process is not necessarily linked to the amount of time you have been saved. Are you satisfied with where you are in the renewal process or do you desire more? If you desire more, then ask yourself “Where do I want to be 3 months from now?” As you answer the next three questions, develop a plan on how you are going to get there.

3. When do you exercise? - If you want your mind renewed, you must plan to spend time studying the Scriptures and in prayer. Spiritual disciplines (prayer, fasting, bible reading, devotions, etc.) are a key component when it comes to renewing your mind. If you want your mind renewed, you must develop a spiritual exercise regimen that targets changing your mindset from the things of the world to the mind of Christ.

4. What are you feeding your mind? - On a daily basis, what percentage of your time is spent filling your mind with “junk food” and what percent is “spiritual food” that brings life and builds your faith? Make every effort to feed your mind with food that nourishes and builds your faith. Recognize that you have the power to choose what you feed your mind.

5. How do you control your thoughts? - How successful have you been at controlling your thoughts? Face it, you determine where your thoughts dwell and all too often we allow our minds to dwell on impure things. In Philippians 4:8, Paul provides us with the list of “whatsoever things” such as things that are pure, lovely, good report,etc.. and then tells us that if there is any virtue or praise, to think, focus, or concentrate on these things. Ask yourself “where do my thoughts spend their time and how can I change my focus when needed?”

Pastor Bobby and Wanda are heading to Florida for a couple of weeks so pray for them to have a productive time of rest and recharging. Plan to join us on Sunday for either the 8:30 or 10:30 service. I will be sharing the power of a transformed life in a message titled "Which way is up?"
