Back Into Action
Perhaps you’ve had a long-term illness, injury, or a sudden surgery that took you out of “action” for a while? As you regained strength, you began to pick up your normal routine of life again. Getting back into what you were called to do feels good and right! Imagine the disciples and followers of Jesus wondering what was next after his departure? Think of the days they had experienced when Jesus was with them, full of miraculous healings, life-changing teachings about God’s love, people being delivered from demonic forces, and even an occasional raising of the dead! What exciting days that had lived! Then suddenly, Jesus was gone, ascending through the clouds. Now what? Jesus had instructed them before his death and also after his resurrection to wait until they were empowered by the Holy Spirit. I’m sure those ten days between Jesus leaving and the Spirit coming felt like they were out of action, but they obediently waited. Then Holy Spirit came! Acts 2:1-4 says: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (NIV) After they were filled, the disciples were put back into action! They praised, they explained, they preached, people responded, and the church was not only born, but grew that first day! The Holy Spirit’s job was to put the church into action! How joyous the apostles and disciples must have been to see people experience the same faith they had that Jesus lived, died, and rose again to forgive their sins! This Sunday, I want to detail how the early church moved from power to presence. As the Holy Spirit enabled them, the church became a mighty force starting in Jerusalem and moving out from there. Even today, the greatest force on earth is still the church expanding as the Kingdom of God is advancing! Some events happening this week: • Thursday at 6 am and 6 pm, we are praying for one of the darkest cities in the world to have a revelation of Jesus. More detail and direction at the meeting. • Friday at 8 am, Pray Winchester is sponsoring, “Prayer walk the Parade Route.” We will gather at the corners of Cork and Cameron Streets. The prayer walk usually takes about 40 minutes tops. |
