A Fresh Perspective

A Fresh Perspective

Colossians 1:1-2 reads, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” NIV

The Message version reads: “So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ — that's where the action is. See things from his perspective.” Col 3:1-2

What a great reminder of how we should live and our outlook on life should be. These last two weeks have been a personal whirlwind tour. First, flying to Nashville to visit our youngest son and family was great; seeing their new setting, visiting their church, and meeting new friends. Secondly, upon returning Wanda and I spoke together at a church conference in Shippensburg, PA. The weekend went well for us and again we saw God at work among his people. Finally, after coming back that Sunday evening, Pastor Billy and I boarded a plane the next day to fly to a pastor’s conference in Germany. Again, we were only there three days until we turned around back to the US for a busy weekend at Crossroads.

As full as these last few weeks have been, I gained a fresh perspective of how God is working in other parts of His Body, not just at Crossroads or in and around Winchester. In Nashville, I admired the young couple leading this church who were from another nation but felt called to the US to church plant. They are doing well. In Shippensburg, we found such hungry people delighting to learn some of the kingdom principles God has shown us. It blessed many people and other church pastors to interact with what we were sharing as truth from God’s word. Finally, in Germany, people gathered from many nations to collaborate in reaching the ends of the earth. With only being together for just two short days, we felt like family by the end joining together worshipping Jesus and united around the common goal to strategize finishing the task Jesus began when He walked the earth.

Getting outside our common familiar surroundings gives us a fresh perspective. We live in a world that is constantly looking at what is in front of us. So, what are some practical ways to gain a different perspective than we currently have?  Here are six action steps that might help break the mold.

1. Take time to reconnect with your mission. What has God called you to do? Are you being diligent in remaining true to the “heavenly vision.”  (Acts 26:19)

2. Follow your awe. Realizing the beauty and majesty of the heavens and the earth can change our perspective. (Psalm  19:1-4)

3. Notice what you’ve said, “Yes to” and what you’ve said, “No to.” Perhaps there is pruning or weeding that needs to take place. Let God speak afresh to you each day!  (Matthew 5:37)

4. When “overload” happens we tend towards, “all or nothing” thinking. If we peeled back the overload, perhaps God would show a more clear way through. (Matthew 11:28-30)

5. Put yourself in someone else's shoes. This step may be the most difficult because we are not in their shoes, but if we would ponder a bit about what they might be going through, perhaps our compassion would increase toward them. (Galatians 6:1-2)

6. Finally, look up higher as Colossians 3:1 reads. This could be expressed by saying, “Zoom out, but don't zone out.”

Walking through life always requires us to stop, ask, listen, and then live a fresh perspective from God.
