Your Guide to What's Happening at Crossroads

Time Away, Worth the Pay

Time Away, Worth the Pay

Wanda and I thoroughly enjoyed our time away.  We are also glad to be back.  I was looking forward to being away.  Not that I don’t enjoy pastoring, but disconnecting always helps brings a greater perspective for me.

In his book entitled, Healthy Leaders, Keith Yoder writes on the discipline of detachment.  He writes healthy leaders know how to detach from burdens, emotions, struggles, weights, conflicts, pressures, and the expectations of leading. He defines detachment as the capacity to remain above the circumstances in our perspective.  If there is no purposed detachment we can over time become enmeshed in the moment to the point that it hinders our leadership.  Leaders who either refuse or don’t recognize the value of detachment burn out over time.  Those who apply the principle of detachment stay in season and bear much fruit.  If we don’t detach then “burdens, emotions, struggles, weights, conflicts, and pressures,” end up controlling us, rather than us directing them!

Detachment should be built into our day, week, month, and year.  Another term used these days is “margin.”  In a culture that prides itself on productivity and efficiency, detachment and margin are not valued.  However, when God created the earth and put in motion human life, he established a day of detachment and margin.  His purpose is that we would gain perspective or keep a proper view of what we are called to do.  Only in a detached, restful state can we regain or keep the proper view of life.

While we were away, I read five books. That’s restful for me. Spending time with Wanda and having meaningful conversations about our lives, relationship, and the direction we are heading.  We went shopping, ate out, cooked in, and watched movies together.  We walked on the beach, prayed together, and just spent time in reflection.  It was a great time to detach and gain perspective.

What about you?  Do you have margin in your life?  Have you learned how to detach, to gain Godly perspective again?  Jesus understands the value of time away when he said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." NIV

This Sunday is CHURCH IN THE PARK!  Starting at 10:30 we’ll worship together, have a short message, and lots of time for fellowship!  Nick Payne and Rachel Adams have done an excellent job of planning.  Some of our folks are grilling their favorite meat.  Mitchell and Hannah are planning games for the children. We even have a Crossroads trivia game planned for the adults.  Come one, come all, bring extra family and friends.  See you Sunday!
