Many Convincing Proofs
This Sunday we will celebrate Resurrection Day. It’s one of the few Sundays that non-churchgoers actually think about attending church. It’s a great opportunity to invite family, friends, and neighbors to join you in worship and celebration. We expect a full house during the second service, so come early or come to the 8:30 service where there will be more space. This year I felt led to focus on the message Many Convincing Proofs. Why did the disciples have such a hard time believing Jesus was alive? Why did they demand that he show them proof? You would think that his closest followers would be the first and most open to believe that he was alive, but they didn’t. Why? Interestingly, when Jesus unfolded this truth, he started with the women, then his inner circle of three, and finally to his other disciples, minus two. Judas, full of remorse, hung himself, but where was Thomas? Perhaps, he was out fishing! When Thomas heard that Jesus was alive, he stated emphatically that he would not believe it unless he could touch him. Jesus honored his request the next time by inviting Thomas to touch and see! It was at that point that Thomas became convinced that Jesus was alive. Then Jesus responded to Thomas with this truth: “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29) As the gospels end, you would think that Jesus had convinced people that he had risen from the dead, but his “convincing proofs” continued into the book of Acts. In the opening chapter in verse three, we find this statement: “After his suffering, he showed himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.” (Acts 1:3) So apparently Jesus was not just clarifying his message regarding the Kingdom of God, but also still convincing people he was alive! This Sunday, I plan to tackle these questions: Why was it so hard for people to believe Jesus was raised from the dead back then? Also, why is it so hard for those of us who have not seen to believe now? I look forward to honoring the risen Jesus with you in worship and the Word this Sunday.
