The Waiting Game
Waiting is a part of life. We wait at a restaurant, stoplights, doctor’s office, the DMV, and those are just a few of our favorite places to wait. Before I delve into the article this week, I want to ask you this question: “What do you tend to do while you are waiting?” Do you begrudgingly endure the waiting, get agitated, or even frustrated? How often do you embrace, look forward to, or maybe even learn to enjoy the wait? I remember going to an amusement park with my friend Jim. He was an amusement park enthusiast. For me they can be fun but I generally do not enjoy waiting in lines. When he invited me he said, “Trust me - I know how to make the most of the lines”. So I took him at his word and agreed. When we arrived at the amusement park it was a gorgeous summer day and the place was packed. This meant the minimum wait time for most of the “good” rides was at least one hour. And the newest ride had over a three hour wait! If you do not know this about me, I am not the most patient person in the world. I have never done real well with just standing around and waiting. I decided to trust Jim and we went to wait in our first line. Immediately he began to interact with the people around us and invited them to join us in a game. Admittedly, I was amazed. Within a few minutes, everyone is laughing and enjoying themselves - remember we did not know any of them before we started waiting. The next thing I knew it was our turn to get on the ride. He had an arsenal of games to play and it seemed that for just about every line he introduced a different game, and I began to notice that people were following us around so they could participate in our “waiting” games. We absolutely spent a lot of time in lines that day but Jim mastered the art of “waiting” and the waiting actually became part of the attraction. I admit that day stands out as one of my most memorable amusement park experiences and it also taught me a valuable life lesson. We all have to wait, it’s what you do while waiting that determines your outlook and enjoyment during the waiting. Acts chapters 1 & 2 record how one hundred and twenty post ascension Christ followers gathered in a room waiting for a promise to be fulfilled. They waited even though knowing very little about the promise; just simply believing Jesus’ words that if they waited for His gift they would receive power from on high. Wait they did, not one or two hours, or even one or two days. They gathered and waited with anticipation for ten days! Then Holy Spirit descended like tongues of fire and they were all baptized in the Holy Spirit. But that event is not all that happened. When Holy Spirit fell their lives were transformed and they were endued with a greater power from God to do amazing things. The book of Acts records how these men turned the world's thinking upside down. All of these things started when the followers of Jesus did the following: believed in the promise of the Holy Spirit, were willing to obey the instructions of Christ, waited with expectation for Holy Spirit to come, and when He came they received him. It does not end there, they walked in the anointing, power, and leading of Holy Spirit in their everyday lives. That is how they transformed the world! This Sunday I have been asked to share a message on Pentecost and the role of Holy Spirit in our lives today. This opportunity is a perfect time to invite someone to join you who may have questions about Holy Spirit and his place today. Hope to see you there! |
