Beauty in Every SeasonTo everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) He has made everything beautiful in its time. (Ecclesiastes 3:11) I’m sure we have all heard the lyrics of the old song, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” also known as “To Everything There Is A Season” written by Pete Seeger in 1959 and performed by numerous singers and groups. The lyrics were taken directly from the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, although the words were rearranged for the song. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon in the 10th century BC. I guess it just goes to show that not much has changed since then! Solomon also said there was nothing new under the sun. We all experience different seasons of life- good and bad, happy, and sad, life and death; we gain, we lose, we love, we hate- these things are common to us all. We watch the seasons change outside our window: we revel in the freshness of spring, the warmth of summer, and the coolness of fall. Even in the dead of winter, we know that spring will come again. Our lives are measured by the seasons – we visit pumpkin farms and eat Thanksgiving dinner with family in the Fall, then decorate and celebrate Christmas together in the Winter. We plant gardens and celebrate Easter in the Spring, and we take vacations in the Summer. Tim and I love to go to the Outer Banks in any season. When we cross over the bridge to the island, it feels as though we have left our cares behind. It is a place of rest and relaxation for us from the busyness of everyday life. We would love to stay there and never come back but we have other important things to do that God has given us for this season of our lives. When we are in the midst of a difficult or sad season, it’s hard to remember the good things. Sometimes those seasons drag on like an endless winter in our lives. We wonder if life will always be hard or if things will ever change. God has a purpose for each season in our lives and will make everything beautiful in its time. He sees the beauty in the dead of winter because he created that season for nature to rest before its rebirth. Just as surely as the seasons will turn, things will change; they do not stay the same. Old things must pass so new things can begin. God can bring beauty, purpose, and new life out of our difficulties when we focus on him. He is always working, even in the winters of our lives. This Sunday is Mother’s Day and I have the privilege of bringing the Mother’s Day message called, A Bloom For Every Season. We will look at some women in the Bible who give us examples of how to bloom in each season of our lives. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday! |
