Leaving No Stone Unturned

Leaving No Stone Unturned

When I was a child I loved rocks. I looked for them everywhere and whenever I “found a keeper”, I would bring them home. Inspiring my early engineer within myself, I once dammed up a stream by piling rock after rock upon each other until I created a small pool. It was amazing how deep I was able to get it. I’d also spend time collecting quartz, marble, anthracite – anything fun or unique I could get. Fossils were a treasure which I routinely found!

I remember picking up stones semi-buried in the dirt and/or mud. The top part looked great, but the bottom was dirty and had to be cleaned. Literally, if I wanted the stone to show its full brilliance I was never able to leave any stone unturned.

That expression – Leaving No Stone Unturned – dates from the mid-1500s! It refers to looking in every possible place when trying to find something or exhaust every possible resource when trying to complete a task or solve a problem. If something was hidden or lost in a field of rocks one would not leave until every stone was unturned.

This week we will look at how God created diversity and how we as His people react to it. Sure, when it comes to Nature we get pretty excited and can be in awe, but what about that person who does not look, act, speak, or have the same religion as you? Internal feelings can get a little complicated at that point.

Paul warned the Corinthian believers:

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,  and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. (1 Corinthians 12:21-25).

This week we will examine the internal “stones” we all have inside and see if there is anything that causes us to trip up when we look at the Body – the diverse creation God made. We will see how we need one another and regain a focus to see each other as significant parts of the Body of Christ.

I’m really looking forward to this message; I’ll see you this Sunday!
