Your Guide to What's Happening at Crossroads

Do Strong Marriages Matter?

Do Strong Marriages Matter?

This past Sunday I started a three-week series called: Loving Well. Based on I Corinthians 13, we will consider the value of Love, the virtues of Love, and the victory of love. It was great on Sunday getting the series started and I know everyone will benefit.

I want to endorse our Marriage Investment Day coming up Saturday, February 18th from 9-5. So far we have 17 couples signed up with room for 30. Slots are filling up - we can only take 13 more couples! The Cost is $40 per couple which includes your material and a nice catered meal for lunch.

When advertising the event we gave three reasons for investing in your marriage. First, your marriage can use it. Second, your family and friends will benefit from you having a healthy marriage. Finally, the world needs to observe that strong marriages are for real today. Those reasons are enough to fill up the room with interested couples to strengthen their marriages.

Yet, there is a fourth reason to invest in strengthening your marriage. That purpose surrounds your authority and integrity. When speaking of authority over the enemy, and being able to rule in life, we often tribute authority to our identity in Christ and knowing his Word. But additionally, the strength of our marriage also increases our authority. Let me explain.

Of all the comparisons Jesus could have used about his relationship to the church, he used the analogy of marriage between a husband and wife (Ephesians 5:28-33). This passage reveals that just as Jesus loves, cares for, and sacrifices himself for his church, in the same manner, he calls a husband to do the same for his wife. He also calls for the wife to respect her husband as the church is to respect Jesus. The covenant of love between Jesus and his church gives great authority over anything the enemy throws at us. In the same way in the covenant of marriage, we have increased authority to overcome the enemy.

When choosing church leadership one of the qualifications is godly order at home. Why? Because if a leader is not defeating the enemy at home, he/she will be weakened to overcome the enemy attacking the church (I Timothy 3:5). Even sexual temptation is settled within a healthy marriage (I Corinthians 7:2-6). Sometimes “marriage” is displayed as difficult, hard, and increasingly unfilling. That’s not the case when both spouses are committed to the Lord and each other to work out or work through anything that tries to come between them. Committed loving spouses are a powerhouse of authority against the attack of the enemy whether against the home or church. One pastor said it this way, “Your first defense is the Word of God, and your second defense is the strength of your  marriage!”
