Apple Blossom Done – Mother’s Day Coming
Celebrations are important in our lives. The Israelites were commanded to have more times of feasting than fasting. Even the Jewish weekly routine is to celebrate Shabbat on Friday nights. The family gathers together and the father both recalls and blesses his family. A Godly celebration should include some acknowledgment of God’s goodness over our lives. One thing I picked up from Jewish celebrations is they took the time to bless each other! For instance, in my family when we now celebrate birthdays (started when the kids were teenagers) we say one thing we appreciate about the person. It’s a way to honor them but also bless them. Why not? If you have been in and around Winchester for any length of time, the Apple Blossom week can become an unwelcome guest. Yet, perhaps before we distance ourselves, maybe we should ask God what He has in mind as the celebration continues. In our staff meeting this week, it was noted a downtown church provided clean, air-conditioned bathrooms for the crowd! It was the most active booth. Sometimes the most impactful things are the simplest to provide. Maybe It’s time we proactively join the celebration, rather than distance ourselves. This coming Sunday, we get to honor mothers. Where would we be without our mothers? That’s simple - unborn. The history of our modern Mother's Day began when Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health, originated Mother’s Day. On May 12, 1907, she held a memorial service at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914 U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. While today’s focus is more on our mothers who are living, originally it was started to memorialize mothers who had passed on. I believe both are important. On Sunday we have planned a special gift for all mothers to be received at the end of the service - something useful and something nice! Coffee and Conversation leader Holly Oesterblad was instrumental in selecting the gifts for Mother’s Day this year. We have also invited Rachel Deavers to bring the message for us. Rachel, her husband Nathan, and daughter Hannah live in Martinsburg WV. They have hosted a life group and Nathan participates in our Freedom Ministries. Donna Donnelly, who serves on our elder team will have a tribute and blessing over moms. Come one and come all, it will be a great day to celebrate. Finally, Wanda and I want to report on our ministry trip from last week. We were hosted by Fresh Wind Ministries of Houston, TX. The setting was a ranch with about 60-plus people in attendance. We were well received and felt like family before we left. It was a full weekend for us but very fruitful. Thanks for your prayers and for releasing us to advance His kingdom from house to house, city to city, and nation to nation. See you Sunday. |

Max L. - My wife and I have spread ourselves thin between work, raising our children, and maintaining a conceived sustainable lifestyle.
